In many cocoa-growing communities, the most trusted financial institution is not a bank. It is a wooden box, a group of neighbours and a shared promise to keep one another afloat. Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) have carried farming families through lean seasons for years, and they remain one of the strongest foundations of rural finance in Ghana.

Now those groups have a clearer route to something bigger. SafeBond Co-operative Credit Union Limited, our sister organisation, has signed a five-year strategic partnership with Webmate Ghana Limited to bring VSLAs online and connect them to formal financial services and quality farm inputs. The agreement, effective 29 September 2026, was formalised in Accra, with officials and staff from SafeBond, Webmate, and SafeCrop present.

Why this matters to cocoa farmers

VSLAs work because they are built on trust. Members pool their savings, lend to one another and hold each other accountable. But trust that lives only on paper is hard to build. Records get lost or damaged, loan sizes stay small, and the gap between a village group and a formal lender is often too wide to cross alone.

For a cocoa farmer, that gap has real costs. It can mean buying inputs late, settling for cheaper products of uncertain quality, or missing the chance to invest in the farm when it matters most.

What the partnership delivers

The collaboration combines technology, finance and field support:

  • Digital records for VSLAs. Webmate’s AgroSuite VSLA Plus platform digitises each group’s savings and loan records, so members can clearly see their own contributions and balances.
  • A path to formal finance. Digitised groups on the platform are connected to SafeBond’s savings and credit services. Well-kept digital records give SafeBond a reliable basis for lending, which opens wider access to credit for members.
  • Quality-assured farm inputs. Members can buy agro-inputs through SafeBond, reducing the risk of fake or diluted products that damage yields and waste scarce cash.
  • Support for cooperatives. The programme is designed to strengthen the operations of farmer groups and cooperatives across cocoa-growing communities.

SafeCrop’s Role

At SafeCrop, our work has always centred on empowering cocoa producers, building strong cooperatives and promoting sustainable, certified farming practices. Savings groups are part of the everyday life of the farmers and communities we serve. This partnership builds on that relationship, bringing digital tools and formal finance closer to the groups that already hold communities together.

Together, SafeCrop and SafeBond offer smallholder farmers a connected set of services: cooperative development and good agricultural practice on one side, and accessible savings, tailored agricultural loans and reliable inputs on the other.

Voices from the signing

The agreement was signed by Victoria Lorretta Owusu, General Manager of SafeBond Co-operative Credit Union, and Charles Annang Darko, Managing Director of Webmate Ghana Limited.

Ms Owusu outlined the key benefits farmers are expected to gain from the partnership, from better financial access to dependable inputs. Mr Annang Darko stressed the importance of digital financial inclusion and agro-input integration in strengthening VSLAs across Ghana, particularly in rural cocoa communities. He thanked SafeCrop and SafeBond for the partnership and expressed confidence that it would contribute significantly to the development of farmers and their cooperatives.

Why five years

The five-year term is deliberate. Financial inclusion is not a one-off campaign; it is a habit that takes several seasons to form. A longer commitment gives the partners time to learn from the groups, refine the platform, and keep services accountable to the people who use them.

Delivering on the promise

A signed agreement is only the beginning. Its value will be measured in the field: services that are simple to use, inputs that live up to their quality assurances, and records that every group member can see and understand for themselves.

Village savings groups have always had the trust. This partnership gives them the tools to match it.
